Table tennis is one of the world’s most popular indoor sports, played in many households for leisure or competitive training. Buying your first indoor table tennis table is usually a major investment for the home and can be confusing for some.

Here are the important factors that table tennis experts look for in an indoor table tennis table:

  • Table top thickness

The most important part of the table tennis table is its top. Competitive players often require its thickness to be at least 25mm (1-inch) to give the ball an even bounce during play, a standard quality of competition-approved table tennis tables. Generally, the price of the table increases along with the thickness of the tabletop so you can expect to spend more for a competition table. Recreational players and beginners, however, won’t really notice the difference in bounce and can do with a thinner top that is less expensive.

  • Frame and leg support

Another important consideration is the table’s undercarriage consisting of the chassis and legs. The undercarriage should be sturdy enough to bear the heavy weight of the tabletop, which on average, weighs approximately 80 kg. To determine a table’s stability, look under the table and check the following features:

  • thickness of the table legs
  • size and number of wheels, if it’s a rollaway table
  • the number of connection points in the table chassis
  • Wheels

While stationary table tennis tables offer more stability than rollaway tables, you may be better off buying one with wheels if you foresee changing its location at home. Rollaway table tennis tables can be folded and are equipped with wheels which allow you to move the table around frequently with ease. The wheels of the table are secured in place with the help of wheel locks. Rollaway tables are available with:

  • 2 wheels in the centre of each half
  • 4 wheels with the central undercarriage and
  • 8 wheels where each half has its own set of 4 wheels

An optional feature you may want to consider for your indoor table tennis table is the playback mode which allows you to fold one end of the table in a vertical upright position. The playback mode is useful for when you are playing alone or want to practise a specific stroke.

Indoor table tennis tables are not only for homes as more people turn to the game as a way to stay physically active and train for competition. These indoor tables are often found in schools, sports clubs, and sports centres.
